LEED Materials and Resources

Prerequisites

Conditions to be fulfilled as minimum to certification for the LEED materials and resources category.  The focus of this category is to minimize the energy and pollution of the extraction, processing, transport, maintenance, and disposal of building materials.

Storage and Collection of Recyclables

Divert waste to landfills by dedicated collection of most used recyclable materials from the building planned operation.

Construction and Demolition Waste Management Planning

Divert waste to landfills by dedicated collection of most used recyclable/reusable materials from the building planned construction process.

PBT Source Reduction—Mercury

(Healthcare Only)  Reduce/recycle products containing mercury such as, but not limited to, lamps and dental wastes.

Credits - up to 13 points

Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction

Prove the reduction of negative environmental effects from construction products and materials through re-use offsite or onsite material; or comparing to typical construction.

Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Environmental Product Declarations

Reward the use of permanently installed products with declaration of their life-cycle environmental impact. Reward the use of such products when they represent more than 50% of the cost. (Structure cannot count for more than 30% and products within 160 km of site count double).

Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Sourcing of Raw Materials

Recognize the raw material sourcing of permanently installed products through re-use, recycled content, certified wood, bio-based, and manufacturer practices.

Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Material Ingredients

Prove the reduction of negative environmental effects from  chemical ingredients used in products and materials through inventory declaration and reduction of contamination in the manufacturing process.

PBT Source Reduction—Mercury

(Healthcare Only)  Complementing the prerequisite in order to reduce PBTs chemicals contamination by using only mercury lamps with long life.

PBT Source Reduction—Lead, Cadmium, and Copper

(Healthcare Only)  Substitutes materials manufactured with lead, cadmium, and copper. Materials are pipes that transport water for human consumption, roof, wired, paints, and reduce/remove joint related copper corrosion.

Furniture and Medical Furnishings

(Healthcare Only)  Use large amount, by cost, of freestanding furniture that have neglectable toxic chemical content.

Design for Flexibility

(Healthcare Only)  Healthcare facilities tends to need frequent need for renovation and adaptation. Strategies used for this purpose are interstitial spaces, reserved space for growth, provide shell space, and use demountable partitions.

Construction and Demolition Waste Management

Calculate and document the amount of diverted construction waste of main material streams or the total.
